The movie Falling Down follows the path of William Foster, a divorced and unemployed former defense engineer, across the city of Los Angeles as he tries to reach the house of his estranged ex-wife in time for his daughter's birthday party. Along the way, a series of encounters, both trivial and provocative, cause him to react with increasing violence and make sardonic observations on life, poverty, the economy, and commercialism. Robert Duvall co-stars as Martin Prendergast, an aging LAPD Sergeant on the day of his retirement, who faces his own frustrations, even as he tracks down Foster. (1)
During his journey, Foster visits a burger restaurant along the way called "Whammy Burger". The whimsical burger joint meets reality and danger when it challenges Foster on the proper breakfast schedule. Foster retaliates by brandishing an Intratec TEC-9 automatic firearm to get his demands met. The scene is widely regarded as one of the most intense and memorable clips in recent cinematic history.
In real life, the restaurant is similar to the movie version 24 years later. The basic structure and feel of the location is mostly the same. Inside, the restaurant proudly displays a Falling Down movie poster. They also prominently display their breakfast schedule and have a subtle "Whammy Burger" mascot painted on the wall. Clearly, the movie is still remembered by the location to this day.
