Jersey: the Channel Island is one of the areas in the UK that can boast the most hours of annual sunshine. Not that Dave Cowburn cares very much. He works in the dark, cool ducts of an old bunker from the Sec-ond World War. Here, he breeds turbot, and is very successful at it, too.
The "Jersey Royal", the regal potato, has been grown on the island since 1880, fertilized with seaweed from the surrounding ocean. In the third generation, Christine Hellio manages approximately 20 hectares on the coast. "The potato is our most important export commodity", she says. It is harvested by hand, as machines cannot be used on the steep fields. The price is quite regal, too: One kilogram costs 6 Euros.
Hugh Gill is one of around 240 voluntary police officers on Jersey. The Honorary Police is regarded as the oldest organised police system in the world. Hugh works for them for one week every month. On the green lanes, the streets of Jersey, the speed limit is 15 miles per hour.
Jersey has an immense tidal range and with up to 13 metres difference, it is the world's third largest. This is good for a rarity: the Ormer - one of the world's most expensive species of snail.

The Lower Omo Valley is a spectacularly beautiful area with diverse ecosystems including grasslands, volcanic outcrops, and one of the few remaining ‘pristine’ riverine forests in semi-arid Africa which supports a wide variety of wildlife.

The annual flooding of the Omo River feeds the rich biodiversity of the region and guarantees the food security of the tribes especially as rainfall is low and erratic.

They depend on it to practice ‘flood retreat cultivation’ using the rich silt left along the river banks by the slowly receding waters.

They also practice rainfed, shifting cultivation growing sorghum, maize and beans on the flood plains. Some tribes, particularly the Kwegu, hunt game and fish.

Cattle, goats and sheep are vital to most tribes’ livelihood producing blood, milk, meat and hides. Cattle are highly valued and used in payment for bride wealth.

Civil war in Syria has already claimed the lives of more than 60.000 people. The prospect that there will soon be an end to the murdering is bad. "Assad listens to no one", suggests Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov when describing his experiences with the Syrian president. The former UN negotiator Kofi Annan, who attempted to mediate between the fronts for several months, always had the feeling that "Assad will not accept reality". At the same time, Annan makes the USA and the Syrian opposition jointly responsible for the disaster: "Those calling for Assad to resign as a precondition for talks make negotiations impossible".
In an exclusive interview, Syria's President, Bashar al Assad, defended attacks by his air force on rebels in Syrian cities, which also massively effect his own people, said: "We have to defend ourselves as the tactics of the enemy force us to". In the same interview, which was recorded at the end of 2012 for this documentary, Assad also made "foreign terrorists responsible for the situation in his country".

In his documentary, Grimme award winner Hubert Seipel analyses the dangerous situation in Syria. Apart from his meeting with Assad, he conducted exclusive interviews with Kofi Annan and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Seipel illuminated a conflict in which not only Kalashnikovs and missiles, but also the Internet plays the central role in public opinion.
"False information and psychological warfare make up a very large part of the Syrian Civil War. It is significantly worse than in previous wars that I had ever been involved in", added Kofi Annan, describing the massive disinformation. Whoever has control of the images of war, has the power to influence political decisions. Massacre marketing is a powerful weapon.

Originally from across the border in what is now Tuva Republic of Russia, the Dukha are one of the last groups of nomadic reindeer herders in the world. As the reindeer populations shrink, only about 40 families continue the tradition in the year 1998.

Dukhas live differently from most other people in the world. The Dukha's sense of community is structured around the reindeer. The reindeer and the Dukha are dependent on one another. Some Dukha say that if the reindeer disappear, so too will their culture. The reindeer are domesticated and belong to the household. In many ways they are treated like family members and shown respect. The community's chores and activities are centered around the care and feeding of their reindeer.[7] Dukha communities on the taiga are usually a group of tents of two to seven households that move camp to find optimum grazing for the reindeer. Herding tasks are shared amongst the camp with children at a young age learning to care for the reindeer and keeping them safe. The girls and younger women do the milking and make yogurt, cheese, and milk tea. Young men and women and elders help with herding. A few of the men stay with the reindeer in the winter months, living in the open air with their herds to protect them from wolves and other predators. The men also make and repair their hunting tools and reindeer saddles and carts. Since they rarely kill a reindeer, they supplement their diet of reindeer milk products by hunting wild animals from the forest.
